"The Raven"

Citizenship and Commitment

In this essay you are going to be reading the relationship of the values citizenship and commitment in the poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe if they are either present, if not give and extensive explanation of why it isn't present.

First of all, for you to have a knowledge of what this values really mean i'm going to give your it's meaning to have and an idea.Citizenship is the status of a person recognized under the custom or law as being a legal member of a sovereign state or belonging to a nationA person may have multiple citizenships. A person who does not have citizenship of any state is said to be stateless, while one who lives on state borders whose territorial status is uncertain is a border-lander. Commitment is a willingness to give your time and energy to something that you believe in, or a promise or firm decision to do something, something that you must do or deal with that takes your time. So, now that i have given you a brief introduction of what this values mean, I will proceed to tell you whether if the values are present in the poem or not.

Let's start with the value of citizenship. In my opinion this value is never mention or either present in this poem of The Raven, it literally has nothing to do with the theme and topic of the story, This is a story about a man whose name was never mention, and he is trying to get over the lost of his loved one Lenore, he was trying to read a book when he heard a tapping and then a bird entered through his window, and in some sort of joke he asked the bird its name and by surprise it responded by saying the words nevermore, which was shocking for the man, then he started asking the bird all sort of things and it continued by answering everything by just saying nevermore, and then as the poem goes through, this man starts to think whether the raven is lenore, or some angels, or something sent by the devil and starts to imagine all types of things. In this citizenship is never develop, it literally makes you see, that this man lives by himself alone, apart from civilization, well that's what I get from reading it.

Now for commitment, I think this value is present in a very strong way, cause as you read the poem you realize how committed this man was to his beloved one, Lenore. Even tho she is dead he still has the hope of her to come back, that's how strong his love towards her, cause when you are committed to someone you love, they become your partner, your main support, the one who does not judge you even with your flaws they accept you as who you are. We can see that Lenore was a great impact on the man's life, and that her death really affected the man in all the ways you can possibly imagine. He is willing to do anything to see his loved one, even if it means to go to either hell or heaven, it doesn't matter to him.

In conclusion, I think there's a lot more of other values present in the story rather than citizenship and commitment, at least commitment is present in the poem with Lenore's relationship with the man but for citizenship i can say is not present not even a little bit of it. Edgar allan poe's way of writing of being dark and mysterious, he uses a lot of symbolism in his works and I think that The Raven is a more personal work if his, cause is related to the death of his wife in real life, maybe that's why people really feel connected to it, cause you feel the sentiment with which it was wrote.
